Your vehicle’s constant velocity (CV) joints are an essential part of the drivetrain. They help allow power to be transferred from the transmission to the wheels while accommodating suspension movement and steering. CV joints are protected by rubber boots that keep grease in and contaminants out. Over time, however, these components can wear out or become damaged, leading to drivability issues. Recognizing the warning signs early can help you avoid more extensive repairs. At Keizer Transmission, we provide expert CV joint repair in the greater Salem, OR area. Here are four common signs of a CV joint problem. Clicking Noises While Turning One of the most common symptoms of a failing CV joint is a clicking or popping sound when turning. This noise is often most noticeable during sharp turns at low speeds, such as when pulling into a parking space. As the joint wears, it loses its ability to move smoothly, creating the characteristic clicking sound. Ignoring this symptom can eventually lead to complete CV joint failure. Torn or Leaking CV Boot The CV boot is a protective rubber cover that keeps grease inside the joint and prevents dirt and moisture from entering. If the boot becomes torn or cracked, grease may leak out and contaminants can get in. During routine maintenance, mechanics often inspect CV boots for signs of damage. Vibrations During Acceleration A damaged CV joint can cause noticeable vibrations when accelerating. As wear increases, the joint may no longer rotate smoothly, creating an imbalance in the drivetrain. These vibrations may become more pronounced under heavier acceleration and should be inspected promptly. Grease Around the Wheel Area If you notice grease splattered on the inside of a wheel or around the suspension components, a damaged CV boot may be the cause. Escaping grease is often one of the first visible signs of a CV joint issue. Addressing the problem early can help prevent further damage to the joint itself.
